Google's own docs: no special AI files or schema needed to appear in AI Overviews
petesena · x · 2026-10-29
petesena warns site owners against paying for special "AI search" files: Google Search Central's documentation says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode — no AI text files, no special schema.
The accompanying graphic breaks Google's rules for AI answers into four points:
- Basics: nothing beyond normal SEO; audit your page against Google's SEO basics and list the top gaps
- Eligible: the page must be indexed, crawlable in robots.txt, and allowed a snippet
- Text: important content must exist as text; rewrite what only lives in images or video
- Match: structured data must match the visible text; flag every mismatch
The takeaway: getting quoted by AI search still comes down to whether your content is worth quoting.
