Nature: 13-46% of developing brain neurons carry CNVs, then get culled

A Nature study from Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital finds 13-46% of neurons in the developing brain carry copy number variants, which can contribute to autism, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Most of these flawed neurons are selectively eliminated around birth, likely because genomic disruptions impair synapse formation—"the brain is selecting for genomic integrity." Kaiming He shares the finding and asks what such extensive biological error-correction procedures can teach artificial neural networks about robust learning, tagging NeurIPS.
