Replicating 90s cel anime with AI: how to animate Jin-Roh-style armor without melting
Oldschoolblues · reddit · 2026-10-29
A Reddit user is building a local/hybrid pipeline to recreate the look of 1999's Jin-Roh: flat colors, single hard shadow, thin ink lines, painted backgrounds, choppy 12fps film print.
Solved so far: background depth-parallax via Depth Anything V2 + FFmpeg, cel-shade and film-grain finish via FFmpeg/Remotion, character stills from FLUX/Gemini.
The blocker is character motion: held cels feel too choppy, video-to-video in-betweens cause shape drift on armor and gas masks, EbSynth keyframe propagation looks promising but unproven, and cutout rigging is a fallback. They're asking the community which setup best locks structural rigidity — ControlNet/IP-Adapters, AnimateDiff, or keyframe propagation — while driving smooth 12fps motion.
