46-minute guide: when to use Obsidian's Quick Switcher vs Search vs Bases
dSebastien · x · 2026-10-29
Sébastien Dubois publishes a 46-minute deep guide (part 5 of his Obsidian search series) untangling Obsidian's four finding tools. The most common Reddit complaint—search not ranking title matches first—confuses two tools: the Quick Switcher (Ctrl/Cmd+O) opens notes by name with fuzzy matching and recent-notes ranking, while Search finds by content but sorts by filename/date, not relevance. His rule: remember the title (even roughly)? Use Quick Switcher, file: search, and aliases; don't remember? Use Search or Omnisearch for relevance ranking. Two extra reflexes: remember a heading but not the note? Type [[plus a keyword—the link suggester searches every heading; want to do something but forgot how? Command palette (Ctrl/Cmd+P). Includes a comparison table and coverage of search operators and Bases for dates and links.
