AI Software Factory vs Dark Factory: two stages of autonomous software delivery
Pavan_Belagatti · x · 2026-10-29
The author contrasts two models of AI-driven software engineering:
- AI Software Factory: AI agents and human engineers collaborate across the SDLC (plan, design, develop, test, deploy, monitor). Agents handle repetitive and complex tasks while humans set direction, review decisions, and approve critical changes — "agents do the heavy lifting, humans stay in control."
- Dark Factory: goes further — the entire delivery pipeline runs autonomously on AI agents, with humans providing only high-level intent (product goals, specs, requirements).
The argument: the future of software engineering isn't just agents writing code, but rethinking how software is built, delivered, and operated, with the human-in-the-loop model seen as the safe near-term path.
