3,957-task study finds no reliable way to combine human and AI oversight yet

A new arXiv paper, Towards Human-AI Complementarity for AI Safety, from researchers including David Demitri Africa tests whether combining human and AI judgments can strengthen AI oversight. The team built the largest known suite of safety-relevant tasks (3,957 instances across 8 datasets and 6 domains), plus a rating platform, and collected 35,613 judgments from 416 human raters with and without AI assistance. While humans and AI make different mistakes and there is real room for complementarity, every combination method they tried either failed to improve performance or simply made humans more reliant on / similar to AI outputs. The takeaway: using machines to help humans supervise machines remains an open problem.
