Michigan's Open Source Leg: a modular open-source powered prosthetic leg
lukas_m_ziegler · x · 2026-10-29
The Neurobionics Lab at the University of Michigan open-sourced the Open Source Leg, a modular powered prosthetic built from drone-industry pancake motors, belt drives (no precision-machined parts), optional series elasticity at the knee, onboard power and control, and a Raspberry Pi running the control loop. Motivation: labs each build their own prosthetics with incompatible mechanics, so control strategies can't be fairly compared — one shared platform aims to fix that. Directed by Elliott Rouse.
