Databricks CEO pitches Snowflake on buying AI tokens from him; Snowflake CEO quips back
HanchungLee · x · 2026-10-29
Databricks co-founder Ali Ghodsi publicly replied to Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy, arguing the companies are complementary and suggesting Snowflake get its AI tokens through Databricks: cheap OSS models plus frontier models (OAI/Anthropic/Gemini/Grok) via Unity Gateway with Smart Routing, budgets, and access control, with Omnigent working on any harness including CoCo. He claims most customers cut token spend 30% over recent months while token counts rose, with Genie tracking the spend—he even offered a quick POC.
Sridhar's comeback: "generous. i was asking about the revenue, not contributing to it." The poster also notes Databricks' MLOps/MLSys depth (MLflow 2018, Cortex 2022, Mosaic 2023) versus Snowflake's BI-friendly but AI-lagging position.
