Supabase rolls out OrioleDB public beta, a Postgres storage engine for update-heavy tables
dshukertjr · x · 2026-10-29
OrioleDB, an open-source Postgres storage engine, is now in public beta on every Supabase plan; it's billed the same as standard Postgres but not yet production-ready.
- The problem it solves: Postgres's default heap storage leaves dead tuples on updates, and every index gets a new entry even for unchanged columns. On update-heavy tables autovacuum can't keep up, causing bloat and slower queries; teams resort to tuning autovacuum, manual VACUUM, or pgrepack rebuilds.
- Other heap limits: primary-key lookups hit both index and table, reads contend on a shared buffer pool, and write-heavy workloads generate heavy checkpoint I/O.
- Availability: compute/disk resizing, read replicas, Postgres upgrades and scheduled backups all work; announced at Supabase Select alongside Multigres and DBArena.
