Hexels: hexagonal primitives beat 2DGS by 4.5-7.4 dB at lower VRAM

Researchers from Alan Yuille's group introduce Hexels, planar hexagonal surface primitives with a first-order local color field for efficient scene rendering and reconstruction. Hexagonal support is area- and boundary-efficient, letting each primitive cover larger coherent regions while keeping controllably sharp boundaries.
- Across 34 scenes, Hexels improve PSNR by 4.53-7.38 dB over memory-matched 2DGS with lower training VRAM
- Per-primitive gains up to 4.74 dB with 2.31x faster FPS
- Cuts DTU surface reconstruction error by 28.9%; highest F1 on 6 Tanks and Temples scenes (34.38% vs 31.72%)
- Also improves 2D image representation over Image-GS
