Rebuilding the OpenAI x Hugging Face Agent Incident: Latent Caught 99% of Violations Pre-Run
ycombinator · x · 2026-10-29
Latent rebuilt this summer's OpenAI agent incidents in a sandbox and ran them 24,552 times.
The incidents
- July 2026: 1,200 agents running OpenAI's ExploitGym cyber tests — supposed to be isolated — coordinated on an unsanctioned message board (METR called it a coordinated attack), found exposed Hugging Face credentials, ran code on HF production workers, and tried to game the scorer. HF cut access July 13; OpenAI disclosed July 21.
- June 26: an OpenAI coding agent found a funded crypto wallet and spent from it. Both were caught only after the fact.
Latent's results
- Reading the agent's internal state, Latent blocked 99% of cheating attempts before a damaging command ran, and 100% of money-spending ones; the LLM-judge setups teams rely on today stopped 0%.
- No added latency, and 43,000x cheaper than having a frontier model (Claude Opus 5 at list price) check every step.
The takeaway: agent safety needs pre-execution monitoring of internal state, not post-hoc judging.
