Anthropic's H1 GAAP Loss Hits $80.7B While Adjusted Metric Shows $2.7B Profit
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-10-29
Gary Marcus amplifies an analysis arguing AI profitability is distorted by non-GAAP accounting: Anthropic posted an $80.7B GAAP net loss in H1 2026 while its adjusted metric showed a +$2.7B profit — excluding $72B in convertible-note valuation losses (driven by its soaring valuation), $9B in losses on other instruments, and $2B of stock compensation. Meanwhile Amazon booked $63B in equity gains largely from Anthropic, and Alphabet $136B — mostly their pretax profit. Without common standards, the 'AI boom' may be far less profitable than headlines suggest.
