Europe's share of global tech R&D collapsed from 23% to 8% since 2005

Data shared by Michael Arouet: Europe's share of global tech R&D spending has collapsed from 23% in 2005 to just 8% today, while the US climbed to 62% and China rose from near zero to 15%. South Korea now outspends Germany, France, the UK, and Italy combined.
Nina Schick argues this is the predictable result of policy choices that systematically favor control and redistribution over growth: layered regulation, data rules, AI restrictions, labor rigidities, and precautionary frameworks raise the cost and slow the pace of turning ideas into products, forcing companies to spend on compliance rather than experimentation. "We don't want to become an open air museum" — Europe will grow poorer and more museum-like, a playground for rich Americans and Asians.
