DeepMind open-sources HOPE, a math framework for quantifying neuron capacity
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-10-28
DeepMind researchers have open-sourced HOPE (Hilbert Operator for Progressive Encoding), a mathematical framework built over the past year to quantify the capacity of individual neurons and rigorously deconstruct what deep networks learn.
The google-deepmind/hope repo (Apache-2.0) also ships DEFT (Dispersed Elastic Fine-Tuning). HOPE compresses an ImageNet-pretrained ResNet-50 through analytical steps like neuron pruning and merging, enabling data-free progressive model compression, with baselines and plotting tools included. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2607.21366. Contributors include Lisa Schut, Dale Schuurmans and Anita Gergely.
