Meta's Python Typing Survey 2026: 1,794 responses, half of devs use multiple checkers
charliermarsh · x · 2026-10-28
Meta's engineering blog published the full 2026 Python Typing Survey report with 1,794 responses; 76.4% of respondents have 5+ years of Python experience.
- Type hint usage changed little over three years, but checker choice shifted sharply as tools like ty and Pyrefly surged.
- Among respondents reporting their checkers, half selected more than one.
- Missing library type information remained the most common difficulty; dynamic frameworks' runtime behavior still can't be expressed by current type systems.
- Recommendations for tool builders: better editor feedback, low-configuration first runs, error messages linking to short explanations; improved callable syntax remains a practical standards goal.
This post links the official full report (the author's earlier tweets were the chart summary and a joke).
