Gartner: 47% of supply chain firms cut 10.5% of staff due to AI, entry-level hit hardest
krishnan · x · 2026-10-28
Gartner surveyed 303 supply chain leaders in May–June 2026 and found AI is reshaping supply chain headcount:
- 47% cut headcount over the past two years, by 10.5% on average, mainly due to AI; 66% say cuts land at entry level
- The overlooked problem: planners, buyers and expediters learned the business through routine work that models now do — this year's savings become tomorrow's missing managers
- Gartner's Tess Frenzel warns the capability gap will ultimately weaken AI performance itself
- Top-quartile firms respond by raising the bar: more analytics skills, less repetitive work, real decisions earlier
- Caveat: all respondents already use AI in workflows, so this is the adopter view
