MiniCPM-OCR ranks 8th on historical-books OCR leaderboard once footnotes are re-enabled
vanstriendaniel · x · 2026-10-28
MiniCPM-OCR (OpenBMB) was added to the FineBooks historical-books OCR leaderboard, ranking 8th of 25 models by character error rate on 2,165 hand-transcribed 18th–19th century book pages.
One gotcha: its SDK drops footnotes, running heads, and page numbers from output by default — a lot of text on old books. Re-enabling footnotes moves it from 15th to 8th place.
