Epoch AI uses customs data to map AI chips: US holds 72% of global compute, China ~10%
Jsevillamol · x · 2026-10-28
- Epoch AI launched an interactive "AI Chip Imports" explorer that estimates national AI compute shares from customs records, answering where AI chips actually end up.
- Key numbers: since 2022, 72% of the world's AI compute has landed in the US and about 10% in China. The US share keeps climbing — roughly 60% of new compute per year in 2022–2024, 72% in 2025, and 78% in the first half of 2026.
- The tool is part of Epoch's AI chip supply chain project, which also covers manufacturing components, sales volumes, data centers, and the companies owning and using these chips.
- Researchers say this adds a fresh evidence source on global compute distribution.
