New arXiv paper frames world model representation as reachability, admission, assignment

The author celebrates that an Olympian, Donna Vakalis, cited their arXiv paper What a World Model Represents Is Three Questions. The paper proposes a three-question framework for what world models represent: reachability (can a training signal identify a task-relevant direction), admission (is that direction recoverable from the latent), and assignment (which eligible route — reconstruction, recurrence, temporal filtering, task supervision — carries it).
Key findings: a direction cannot enter the latent unless some training signal identifies it; reconstruction/recurrence/filtering may already recover coordinates, leaving no residual direction for a reward or value head; the number of independent predictions determines how many coordinates get installed (one through four predictions admit one through four directions); reachability is not admission — a temporal second-moment coefficient can stay absent under next-token prediction yet be restored by adding a dedicated head.
