Anthropic built Scion, its own source control, as daily merged changes grew from 2,500 to 30,000

Anthropic revealed that Claude-driven coding pushed its daily merged changes from 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September, making human-scale dev infrastructure the new bottleneck. In five months the team migrated its monorepo from Git to Scion, an in-house version control system, alongside a code review surface (Antique), code search, and a source control IAM system.
Scion's key insight: Git assumes every clone works offline with full history, but Anthropic's clients are almost all always-online agents. So Scion keeps history, blame, and merges server-side; clients fetch only what they read. Anthropic stresses Scion isn't a general Git replacement and its internal token spend is far beyond what most businesses would accept.
The poster's advice for AI startups: before buying another coding agent, time a checkout — run task batches with 2, 5, and 10 agents, clock generation vs. checkout/build/test/review waits, and check whether accepted changes per hour actually rise or just the queue.
