Google unveils "sleep" framework for continual learning without knowledge cutoffs
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-10-28
Google Research published a new approach to continual learning: a "sleep" phase where the model alternates between active work and offline consolidation.
- During sleep, pre-allocated Mixture-of-Experts memory blocks unlock to consolidate short-term memories into long-term knowledge
- A "dreaming" step replays new scenarios, filtering for the highest-potential ones to improve on
- Aim: LLMs that keep integrating new facts and enhancing reasoning while mitigating catastrophic forgetting — no static knowledge cutoff
