Hospital mortality falls ~40% in 3 years at highest AI-adopting health systems, a16z chart shows
4KTV · x · 2026-10-28
A chart from a16z and Protege shows in-system mortality per 100k patients diverging by ambient AI adoption (share of notes referencing AI tools). In 2023, high- and low-adoption health systems both sat around 1,600 deaths per 100k. By 2026 (estimated), the highest-adoption systems dropped to 1,000 — a nearly 40% decline — while low-adoption systems climbed back to 1,600. The gap widens as AI adoption accelerates.
Caveats: data comes from Protege's healthcare provider network, the 2026 figure is an estimate, and confidence intervals are wide — this is correlational evidence, not proof of causation.
