GitHub's Spec Kit pushes spec-driven development: 5 commands to plan before coding agents build
Arindam_1729 · x · 2026-10-28
GitHub released Spec Kit, an open-source MIT-licensed toolkit (14k stars) built on a simple thesis: stop improvising with prompts and give your coding agent a clear spec first. The workflow uses 5 commands — /speckit.constitution (project principles), /speckit.specify (what to build), /speckit.plan (tech stack and architecture), /speckit.tasks (break down work), /speckit.implement (let the agent build). It supports 30+ AI coding agents including GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, and also bundles bug-fixing and idea-assessment processes. The companion article argues agents are already good at writing code — the bottleneck is humans babysitting them, which spec-first workflows aim to fix.
