AI agents formalize the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, math's largest proof
IgorCarron · x · 2026-10-28
Researchers announced the completion of a formalization of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG) — the largest theorem in mathematics, whose original proof spans 15,000 pages across hundreds of papers and decades of work, with few people alive who fully understood it.
The team finished the formalization on October 26, confirming the enormous theorem is true. Along the way they found hundreds of errors in the existing literature, writing a separate paper about the largest one — but the overall proof held up.
Commenters highlight that formalizing this took coordinated AI agents weeks rather than decades of human effort, calling it a glimpse of the future of engineering.
