Meta's PrivacyLib runs billions of privacy checks per second across hundreds of systems

Meta engineers detail PrivacyLib, a shared library that centralizes privacy enforcement — historically requiring months of per-system reimplementations.
- Runs inside the clients of hundreds of data/processing systems; each integration maps native APIs onto five shared operations (read, write, RPC, request entry, inline execution), so modules target the abstraction, not any system's API.
- Requirements compile at build time into their simplest evaluable form; per-request and per-host caches keep the common path off the network.
- For raw RPC traffic, a cryptographically signed token lets ServiceRouter confirm a request already passed richer client-side checks.
Result: billions of checks per second across the fleet while consuming a small fraction of Meta's compute.
