Anthropic S-1 analysis: compute commitments locked to 2030+ while revenue renews yearly
SumitGup · x · 2026-10-27
StAlphaResearch's scenario analysis of Anthropic's S-1 exposes fragile circular financing:
- Term mismatch: customer commitments renew annually, but compute commitments (mostly take-or-pay) are locked to 2030+; they jumped from $100B to nearly $600B in H1 2026
- Modeling: even bullish assumptions have compute payments exceeding total revenue by 2027-2028, with gaps filled by Google, Amazon, Broadcom — simultaneously suppliers, shareholders and creditors
- Fatal clause: drawdown conditions are tied to revenue growth — money is available when least needed and vanishes when most needed; structural problems could start H2 2027
- Collapse order: frontier lab growth slows → supplier financing tightens → labs drop renewals → neoclouds default; Anthropic itself can cancel cancellable contracts first
- Charts show Bull/Base/Bear 2030 revenue at $188B/$149B/$90B vs compute spend split across Google TPUs, NVIDIA neocloud/hyperscaler, Amazon Trainium, AMD
- S-1 p.140: compute commitments "must be performed regardless of revenue or utilization; our ability to obtain additional capital depends on many conditions beyond our control" — the whole supply chain is betting on the second half of that sentence
