Gemini CLI PR fixes dotted Gemini 3 model names breaking multimodal function responses
jesussamuel-byte · ghdev · 2026-10-27
A community PR (#29982) on google-gemini/gemini-cli fixes a model-matching bug: with experimental.dynamicModelConfiguration unset, supportsMultimodalResponse() used model.startsWith('gemini-3-'), so dotted names like gemini-3.1-pro-preview or gemini-3.5-flash were misclassified, causing binary image data from tools like readfile to be emitted as a sibling inlineData part instead of nesting inside functionResponse.parts. The fix adopts the regex /^gemini-3(\.|-|$)/ (matching isGemini3Model), adds unit tests covering dotted variants and stripToolCallIdPrefixes part preservation, and closes issue #29589.
