Ex-UK AI Security Institute chief scientist Geoffrey Irving calls for unilateral frontier AI pause
birchlse · x · 2026-10-27
Geoffrey Irving, until recently chief scientist at the UK AI Security Institute, argues Anthropic and/or OpenAI should unilaterally stop frontier AI progress first, then broaden to more companies and negotiations with China. 'Unilateral pauses can't hold for long, but they are the right first step: when you're doing a very dangerous thing, the correct action is stop.' Sigal Samuel adds that rather than modeling unpredictable actors, players should just do simple, correct things others can follow.
