WireGuard tutorial: private encrypted tunnels between devices on any network
victorialslocum · x · 2026-10-27
WireGuard, an open-source VPN protocol, creates encrypted tunnels between two devices so they can communicate privately even across different networks — for example, reaching a home server from a laptop on café Wi-Fi without exposing the app publicly.
Setup feels familiar to anyone who has used SSH keys:
- Each device gets a key pair — a private key stays on-device, a public key is shared.
- Exchange public keys so the devices recognize each other.
- Each device gets a private address used to reach it through the tunnel.
Once configured, everyday tools like browsers and API clients just connect to that private address, with no need to understand the encryption underneath. An accompanying diagram explains the tunnel: end-to-end encrypted traffic, app never exposed to the public internet.
