Citation analysis shows neuroscience-AI bridge is real but narrow and tool-heavy
neurovium · x · 2026-10-27
The Transmitter published a citation analysis by Renato Duarte arguing that the neuroscience–AI connection is real and gaining momentum, but remains narrow and tool-heavy: what crosses from AI to neuroscience is mostly tools, while what flows back is mostly classical concepts. Modern deep learning owes surprisingly little to neuroscience in its actual machinery.
Commenter @neurovium raises two caveats: citation-graph methods can miss the true seeds of a field—early propelling papers often lose influence to later "symbolic" references—and many of the analysis's "most influential" papers are just brain-signal analysis tools with little to do with NeuroAI proper.
