GenXR-Bench: AI coding agents fail at XR apps, best model scores just 50.9%

Google, UCLA, and CMU researchers released GenXR-Bench, the first end-to-end benchmark for coding agents building XR (extended reality) apps.
Key findings
- Coding agents often fail because they lose track of objects in 3D space. The strongest configuration (Claude Opus 5) reaches only 50.9% overall Pass@1; no model exceeds 29.2% on SDK feature tasks.
- Failure analysis: coordinate-frame mistakes appear in 64.4% of failed runs, startup race conditions in 44.9%, plus recurring misunderstandings of async sensor lifecycles and physical grounding.
Why standard benchmarks fall short: XR apps run in dynamic 3D environments reacting to head motion, hands, and room sensing—unit tests or browser clicks can't verify a virtual button follows your palm.
Benchmark design
- 112 expert-authored tasks: 24 feature implementations, 21 bug repairs, 67 full app builds.
- Tests simulate hand and room inputs; the suite matches blinded expert judgments of 124 apps on consumer XR hardware at 96.5% accuracy.
Practical takeaway: when using agents for XR apps, test with simulated hand/room input—agent-written unit tests often miss runtime bugs.
