Thiel Fellowship posts 13.79% unicorn founder conversion rate; Chris Olah was in its 2012 class
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-27
Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah was in the second Thiel Fellowship class (2012) alongside Dylan Field — and was originally working on 3D printing and open-source design software, not AI. Shared data shows the fellowship produced 40 unicorn founders from roughly 290 fellows between 1997-2024, a 13.79% conversion rate that beats Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Y Combinator (1.82%). The takeaway: the program bets on the person, not the first idea.
