OpenAI claims its model refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis and proved Yang-Mills existence
dotey · x · 2026-10-27
On Oct 26 OpenAI announced its internal model produced one result each in math, CS, and physics, two of which target decades-old open problems — none peer-reviewed yet.
- CS: The paper presents a new algorithm for 3-SAT-style problems that, while still slow, scales faster than the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH, Impagliazzo & Paturi 1999) asserts, refuting it. This does not prove P=NP, and OpenAI says practical speedups need much more work. The proof is checked in Lean, with paper and code on GitHub; verification is led by Impagliazzo, Paturi, and MIT's Ryan Williams.
- Physics: OpenAI also claims progress toward a proof of Yang-Mills existence, a $1M Clay Millennium Prize problem.
