OpenAI claims models refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis, proved Kakeya, with Lean proofs
LinusEkenstam · x · 2026-10-27
OpenAI announced three new discoveries in math, CS, and physics spanning harmonic analysis, complexity theory, and quantum field theory: its models reportedly refuted the Exponential Time Hypothesis (the assumption underpinning hundreds of hardness results), proved local smoothing (and thus Kakeya) in every dimension, and gave a rigorous existence proof for QCD covering half of a Millennium Prize problem — each with a Lean proof. The release model is unusual: no credit claimed, no NDAs, with external expert shepherds including ETH originators Impagliazzo and Paturi and Nobel laureate David Gross. As the poster puts it: if even one holds up, this is the week AI stopped just helping with science and started doing it.
