Anthropic says insurers can't cover its catastrophic risk — experts propose an AI mutual insurer

Anthropic has claimed the entire insurance industry lacks capacity to underwrite the catastrophic risk it poses. In a Lawfare article, Rune Kvist and co-authors propose a frontier AI mutual insurance company owned by the labs themselves: it would enforce standards, peer-review incidents, pool safety R&D, and could be stood up "by Christmas," with the world's largest reinsurers ready to co-build the market. The authors argue it beats FINRA-style SROs (capture risk) and slow court liability, giving voluntary standards real teeth via skin in the game.
