Inference economics: Anthropic revenue and margins can rise as token prices fall
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-27
Gavin Baker and Suhail debated whether falling token prices crush inference-provider economics:
- Gavin Baker: revenue per GPU can increase as token prices decline if per-GPU token throughput rises enough. So both Anthropic's revenue and margins can go up as token prices drop, provided GPU rental prices rise less than the product of (token price decline × per-GPU throughput increase).
- Suhail added that inference is not the same shape as a neocloud business — inference providers have far more levers to adapt to a variable market around compute prices.
Takeaway: token price deflation doesn't necessarily erode AI company margins; throughput gains are the key variable.
