RL doesn't just reward thinking longer—it incentives parallel agent swarms
rosstaylor90 · x · 2026-10-27
The author outlines two RL-driven behaviors: if thinking more helps, RL pushes agents to spend more inference compute (the reasoning paradigm). But if agents are also rewarded for faster progress, they're incentivized to parallelize work—and once that work needs coordination, communication becomes valuable, pointing toward agent collectives / agent swarms. The core idea: reward design determines whether agents learn to think deeply or to divide and coordinate.
