Anthropic S-1: $1.4M cost per employee, compute commitments up 4.9x in six months

Anthropic has filed its S-1 with the SEC, with reported valuation estimates of $1.5–2 trillion — potentially the largest IPO in history, surpassing SpaceX. Key numbers from the filing:
- Revenue surging: quarterly revenue grew from $376M in 25Q1 to $11.555B in 26Q2; 26Q3 is implied at $16.9B (S-1 says it's 86x 2024Q4). After the November 2025 Opus 4.5 launch (stronger, cheaper), QoQ growth jumped from 48% to 132%. A September 2026 price cut reduced Opus 5.5 per-task cost 40%, Fable 5.1 25%, complex coding/agent tasks up to 45% — while "preserving margins."
- Betting on the future: only a quarter of compute in H1 served paying customers; the rest went to next-gen model R&D. Non-cancellable compute commitments rose 4.9x in six months ($54.6B → $265.6B), plus $321.4B in leases not yet started. Headcount grew from under 1,000 to 5,300 — roughly $1.4M per employee per year.
- Other details: 5–7% of revenue in the first nine months came from customers later found to violate usage policies; QoQ growth recently slowed. The author reads this as a company aggressively betting everything on the future — and a reason it's rushing to IPO, warning of a siphon effect on peer tech stocks.
