Anthropic has filed for an IPO. At an expected $1.5 trillion valuation, the $142B total invested across rounds would be worth nearly $1 trillion — a blended 6.5x return in five years.
- Series A (2021, $124M): no traditional VC led; Jaan Tallinn led with Dustin Moskovitz and Eric Schmidt participating — a likely 345x return worth $43B
- Series B (2022): led by SBF/FTX at 79x; FTX's $500M stake, potentially worth $39B, was sold by the bankruptcy estate for $1.3B in 2024
- VCs: Spark invested $777M from the 2023 C-round onward, now worth $11B (79x on C); Menlo's D-round 30x; Lightspeed-led E-round 16x in 18 months
- Strategics: Amazon put in $18B for 21% ownership worth $310B (17x); Google's stake $83B. Anthropic also committed $110B+ and $111B+ in compute purchases to AWS and Google Cloud — both firms profit as shareholder and supplier
- Founders & employees: seven co-founders hold 240M shares each ($21B apiece, $150B total), each pledging 80% to charity; a 5% Public Benefit Fund holds $75B; other employees' equity totals $355B — possibly the largest, fastest wealth creation event in tech history
