Sakana AI's RSI Lab took the stage at Hitotsubashi Hall: a keynote from Schmidhuber and hardmaru on thinking differently, iwiwi on pretraining Japan's own foundation model Sawara, and RobertTLange on The AI Scientist. Slides argued "the model layer is back": open models trail by only 4 months, 9 of 13 open-weight models are on the intelligence-vs-price frontier, GPT-2-grade model cost fell from $431K in 2019 to $48 today, and agentic RL makes open models stronger on specialized tasks. Stefania Druga and Sebastian Risi presented world models for physical AI.
