Open-source extynt MCP lets AI agents edit live After Effects comps like real editors
lucastwarren · reddit · 2026-10-27
Developer lucastwarren released extynt, an MIT-licensed open-source MCP server that lets AI agents work in After Effects like an actual editor instead of blindly writing ExtendScript.
Key design:
- Connects to your already-open AE project and edits the live comp;
- Agents never run raw scripts — they propose typed plans (add shape layer, set keyframes, parent layers), extynt validates each against the real project, applies it as one undo step, then reads every value back and returns a receipt;
- Catalogues all installed effects (including third-party plugins) with real control names and ranges, so "add Deep Glow" hits the right matchName; plugins that would crash are fuzzed in the background at install time;
- Deletes, renders and imports require approval; simple lookups are answered offline by a deterministic tier.
Architecture: MCP client → local sidecar → native AE plugin → live project. Works with Claude Code, Codex and any MCP client, plus a docked AE panel. Bring your own model, no account, nothing collected. Signed installers for AE 2025/2026 on Mac and Windows; author admits bugs remain after two-plus months of squashing.
