Anthropic's $80.7B "loss" is mostly paper: fixed-price share rights to Google/Amazon at $259 vs $589

Anthropic's S-1 reveals the real composition of its $80.7B first-half 2026 net loss — almost all of it is accounting, not cash:
- In March/April, Google and Amazon secured rights to buy shares at a fixed $259; weeks later new investors paid $589. Amazon's older loans also convert at fixed $2.09–$5.05.
- As Anthropic's valuation soared, those fixed-price rights became worth far more, and accounting rules book that rise as a loss: $72.4B plus $9.4B — nearly the entire net loss.
- No cash left the company; the actual operating loss was only $0.7B.
- Side detail: Broadcom, which rents AI chips to Anthropic, agreed to finance part of that rent.
The takeaway: the headline loss is largely a byproduct of Anthropic's own valuation rising, not its burn rate.
