kimo: open-source GUI-less video editor lets AI agents cut video via typed MCP tools and render frames to self-verify
LieTop7965 · reddit · 2026-10-27
A college student released kimo, a free, MIT-licensed video editor with no GUI, driven entirely by AI agents over MCP (works with codex, cursor, opencode, etc.):
- Typed tool calls only — cut, trim, keyframe, titles/captions, color grade, tracking, particles, audio, export — no raw ffmpeg strings, avoiding off-by-one frame errors and audio/video drift
- The killer feature: the agent can render a frame to verify its own work, turning the loop from 'run and hope' into 'run, verify, keep going'
- Extremely light: a 15MB CPU-only Rust binary that runs on a 2GB box, no GPU or containers
- Author admits it's early with rough edges and is soliciting feedback
