OpenAI says its models produced a Yang-Mills existence proof, formalized in Lean
exophades · reddit · 2026-10-27
OpenAI's blog post "Building scientific understanding with academic communities" reveals its models produced a natural-language proof of Yang-Mills existence (a Millennium Prize Problem) on September 9, 2026, followed by a QCD proof on September 18. Given the length and complexity, release was postponed until Lean formalization completed — the Yang-Mills existence formalization finished on October 16, 2026, spawning the academic collaboration described in the post.
If the formalization holds, this marks the first time an AI model has formally cracked a Millennium-Prize-level open problem in mathematics.
