A look back at BrainCog, a 2023 paper presenting a spiking neural network (SNN)-based, brain-inspired cognitive intelligence engine for both brain-inspired AI and brain simulation.
The framework decomposes cognition into modules, each with dedicated SNN variants:
- Perception & learning: unsupervised STDP-based SNNs, SNNs with global feedback connections, biologically plausible BP SNNs, efficient SNN-to-ANN conversion, quantum-superposition-inspired SNNs, multisensory integration SNNs
- Decision making: brain-inspired decision SNNs, Spiking Deep Q Networks
- Motor control: dedicated motor control SNNs
- Knowledge representation & reasoning: music memory and stylistic composition, sequence production, commonsense knowledge graphs, causal reasoning SNNs
- Social cognition: bodily self-perception and theory-of-mind SNNs
It also models biological mechanisms like excitatory/inhibitory connections and dopamine regulation across brain regions from retina to prefrontal cortex.
