Formal methods expert: never trust LLM-generated specs, vet them instead
davidmanheim · x · 2026-10-27
Formal verification researcher TaliaRinger responds to a fundamental critique of LLM-based formal verification: if you trust an LLM to flawlessly convert legacy code into a formal spec, why not trust its code output directly? Drawing on years of hard-to-publish specification synthesis work, her answer: never trust the spec — vet it. The core point is that LLM-generated formal specs require independent validation, exposing the key weakness of current formal verification pipelines.
