Anthropic IPO filing reveals $11.6B quarterly revenue, $750B+ compute commitments
TiernanRayTech · x · 2026-10-27
Columnist Tiernan Ray dissects Anthropic's draft IPO filing and its financials:
- Explosive revenue: quarterly revenue grew from $376M in Q1 2025 to $11.56B in Q2 2026, roughly 30x in about 18 months; Q2 2026 posted its first operating profit of $974M after quarters of losses.
- Massive net loss: fair-value changes in convertible notes, derivatives and SAFEs (single quarter -$59.6B) drove a $66.3B net loss in Q2 2026.
- Compute commitments: over three-quarters of a trillion dollars in disclosed compute capacity agreements. Ray argues pricing pressure is inevitable in this market, questioning revenue that is largely consumption-based without fixed agreed prices.
- Other red flags: controlled-company structure, founder voting lock, large potential convertible debt, money-market interest rate exposure, and incalculable insurance risk.
His verdict is harsh: for a fast-growth business earning $12B a quarter, this IPO "doesn't look sane or bold — maybe wasteful."
