The Generative Intelligence Lab at the University of Freiburg, led by Prof. Adam Kortylewski, is hiring multiple fully funded PhD students through the ELLIS PhD Program, with a focus on generative AI, world models, and AI safety. Applications close October 31.
The lab's thesis: AI should understand the visual world by learning to generate it, capturing causal structure beyond pattern recognition to reduce dependence on large-scale human supervision and improve causality, interpretability and safety.
Recent activity includes a NeurIPS acceptance, three ECCV 2026 papers (with a benchmark on semantic object correspondence in vision foundation models as a spotlight), and workshops on embodied spatial reasoning at NeurIPS 2026 and world-model evaluation at ECCV 2026.
