AI assistant traffic to retail sites doubled, but converts at half the rate of organic search
Dapper-Tale-4021 · reddit · 2026-10-27
An analytics firm tracking 2,000 retail sites found AI-assistant referrals roughly doubled this year — while those visitors convert at about half the rate of organic search traffic.
The author argues the gap likely comes from intent: organic visitors have already done comparison work and click deliberately, while AI-referred users are still in browsing mode since the assistant did the filtering. Treating AI referral traffic as equivalent to organic in reporting would then give a distorted picture of performance.
The poster asks whether ecommerce operators see the same split in their own data.
