Open-source FableCut lets AI agents edit a real video timeline via remote MCP
FastPresence9799 · reddit · 2026-10-27
FableCut is an MIT-licensed video editor with a remote MCP server that lets AI agents work directly on a real editing timeline. FableCut Studio runs in the browser: connect an MCP client, give natural-language instructions, and the agent gets 16 tools to edit inside your tab.
Design highlights:
- Editor stays interactive: you watch the timeline change while the agent works.
- Media stays local: the relay carries tool calls/results (project text, requested frames), not video files.
- Agent-agnostic: works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, OpenCode and other MCP clients.
- Beyond basic cuts: audio tools, color grading, captions, transcription, silence removal.
The latest update adds browser-based Whisper transcription (77MB model download once), text-based editing by deleting words, word-timed captions, and silence removal. Studio is free; an npm local version adds more tools. The author seeks feedback on designing remote tools that control a stateful in-browser app.
